Optical Engineer

Job Summary:

Performs engineering tasks including designing, developing, testing, analyzing, troubleshooting and implementing optical support for all three Staco Systems business units. Working closely with our in-house Sr. Optical Engineer in creating and evaluating optical designs to meet requirements of specified applications. Provides technical skills supporting research and product development.

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of new products and improvement of existing products
  • Assist in all development phases for selected optical technologies, from inception through to product release
  • Validates concepts through breadboard builds and analysis
  • Manages a project plan including key deliverables, timeline, and budget
  • Responsible for optical component and subassembly test development, data acquisition, analysis, and reporting
  • Work with Mechanical Engineers and CAD Designers for prototype and pilot detailed design
  • Develops test plans, creates test procedures, performs tests and data reduction and evaluates test data. Modifies designs based upon test results, if necessary
  • Analyze problems in existing systems, plans and conducts investigations, and develops solution proposals
  • Interface with manufacturing engineering to develop and implements designs that improve manufacturability
  • Interface with manufacturing personnel to coordinate the build of modified or new prototype assemblies
  • Work with the sales and marketing departments to generate product specifications based on customers’ input
  • Work with other team members and marketing department for product introduction
  • Define test requirements per quality and reliability standards of the industry
  • Interfaces with purchasing to obtain prototype components for use in assemblies

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to translate and statistically analyze data, then effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats
  • Familiarity / working knowledge of photometric measure equipment
  • Ability to use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic e-mail systems
  • Demonstrated creativity in solving complex optical design problems
  • In depth knowledge of optical engineering principles
  • Experience with Product Development tasks desired (bills of material, interfacing with vendors, procurement of material for prototyping and change management)
  • Working knowledge of electro-mechanical switches, panel assemblies and keyboards
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD–3009, Mil-PRF-22885, MIL-L-85762, MIL-P-7788
  • Ability to work either independently or as part of a development team
  • Self-motivation and ability to work in a fast-moving high-tech environment

Skills/Experiences:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Chemistry or Physics and a minimum of two (2) years Optical or Opto-mechanical Design experience.
  • Experience with product development desired.

Physical Standards:

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This position takes place in an office environment. This is primarily a sedentary position which requires occasional reaching, stooping and lifting of office files, reports or records, typically weighing 5 pounds or less. Must be able to sit and work at a computer terminal for up to two and one-half hours at a time.
